Nato 14 agosto 1931 in Germania, vicino alla frontiera con la
Francia
Tutta la formazione a St Wendel, Germania.
Entrato a St. Wendel come candidato/postulante per diventare
fratello Verbita, all’età di 15 anni, nel novembre 1946.
Noviziato 1950-52, St. Wendel. Primi voti: 8 settembre 1952 a
St Wendel, continuazione della formazione
professionale/artigianale
Ancora nei voti temporali, fu mandato a Roma nel 1955, quando
P. Grosse-Kappenberg era superiore generale, per lavorare come
cuoco nel Collegio. Era presente a Roma quando si costruivano le
due ale del Collegio (dove ci sono la cucina e il refettorio e
gli archivi adesso)
Nel 1958 tornò a St. Wendel per la preparazione ai voti
perpetui che emise il 8 settembre 1958 a St. Wendel. Dopo i voti
perpetui, nel 1958, fu destinato a Monaco, in Baviera, per due
anni, dove in quel tempo cominciava l’anno pastorale e la
costruzione della casa per questo anno pastorale. Fra Luigi
faceva parte dell’inizio di questa iniziativa.
In quel tempo Fra Luigi si presentò per un primo destino
missionario. Nel 1960 ricevette il destino per Nemi, dove il
superiore generale P. Schütte aveva appena comprato la
proprietà e iniziato la costruzione della casa per il Terziato,
Fra Luigi era presente agli inizi del programma di rinnovamento,
il Terziato.
Nel 1983 fu trasferito da Nemi al Collegio
del Verbo Divino a Roma. E da quel tempo è sempre stato nel
Collegio. Complessivamente Fra Luigi ha trascorso 56
anni a Roma e a Nemi. Nessuno dei confratelli a Roma adesso ha
trascorso un tempo cosi lungo a Roma.

- 1983 – 2013: Roma (Collegio del Verbo Divino)
- 2013 – 2017: St. Wendel (GER)

Died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Jharsuguda
Br. Augustine Minj was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital,
Jharsuguda, on 15 May 2017 due to ill health. He was diagnosed
with multiple organ failures. Since May 15, 2017 he was
hospitalized and was given best of medical care and assistance
at St. Mary’s Hospital, Jharsuguda. In the initial days of his
hospitalization he showed gradual improvement in his health and
was responding well, later on his health deteriorated gradually.
Though he had severe pain he never complained. He was called to
eternal rest on 23.09 2017 at 2.10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Hospital,
Jharsuguda
The funeral service will be on 24.09.2017 at 10.30 a.m. at
Provincial House, Shanti Bhavan, Jharsuguda, Odisha

We are very sorry to inform about the very demise of Fr.
Vadackumkara Thomas, SVD, from INE Province. Fr. Thomas
Vadackumkara had a massive heart attack while playing basket
ball and fell in the court resulting head injury at 5.20 p.m. Immediately he was
rushed to JMJ Hospital, Sambalpur. Doctors
tried their best to revive him. But he expired at 5.50 p.m.
The funeral service will be made known later.

is with great sadness that we inform you that Brother Xavier
Eshman SVD died peacefully at Divine Word Residence, Techny, IL
on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at 4:30 a.m.
He had battled cancer for the past year and came to Techny
about a month ago for hospice care.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light
shine upon him.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced on
Monday.

Brother Xavier Eshman SVD passed away peacefully in the
early
hours of Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Techny, IL. He was born on
November 27, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio.
Brother Xavier served as a missionary in the United States,
Argentina and Paraguay.
- Prior to joining the Society of the Divine Word, he
graduated from the Ohio State University with a bachelor’s
degree in agriculture and a minor in education.
- As a postulant and young Brother he worked on the dairy
farm at Techny and taught science and math in the Brother
Candidate High School. He did the same at Conesus and Girard
in the late-1960s.
- In 1970 he went to Argentina where he taught classes and
did administrative work in the College of St. Joseph, School
of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine.
- He returned to the United States in 2010 after forty
years as a missionary in Argentina and Paraguay and was
assigned to Bordentown.
- He was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and came to the
Divine Word Residence at Techny for advanced medical and
hospice care shortly before he died.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of
Brother Patrick Hogan, SVD.
Brother
Patrick Hogan SVD passed away peacefully Monday morning at 10:17
a.m., June 5, 2017 at Techny, IL. He was born on August 2, 1936
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Brother Pat served as a missionary in China and the United
States
- In 1963, he re-established the operation of the Society
of the Divine Word’s Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan,
nearly 15 years after it had been closed by the Chinese
Communists in Peking (Beijing).
- He became fluent in both spoken and written Chinese, and
was a teacher and administrator at the university until
1973.
- In 1975 shortly after the fall of Saigon, Brother Pat
was instrumental in connecting the Vietnamese refugees with
the Chicago Province. This has resulted in 75 ordinations
and several Brothers professing perpetual vows.
- From 1975 – 1983 he taught linguistics, Chinese and
Asian studies at Divine Word College, Epworth, Iowa.
- He returned to Fu Jen University from 1983-1999
completing a total of 25 years there.
- From 1999-2004 he was the Director of Divine Word
International, the conference and retreat center at Techny,
Illinois.
- He went to Bordentown, New Jersey, in 2004, and served
as rector, vice-rector and council member.
- Stricken with cancer, he came to the Divine Word
Residence at Techny in 2015 for medical care.

Buongiorno!
Ho conosciuto e sono stato amico con Bro. Pat Hogan, che
ebbi
la benedizione di incontrare a Taipei, dove conobbi anche tutti
gli altri membri SVD di FuJen Univ., tutti confratelli
eccezionali, ricordo fra gli altri Fr. Ed Vargo e fr. Dennis
Callan (the menace) e fratel Norbert. La triste notizia della
sua morte mi ha raggiunto solo ieri qui a Fatima. Vorrei
esprimere le mie condoglianze e la mia simpatia per la scomparsa
di una così cara squisita persona umana e cristiana. Gli sono
molto debitore, a cominciare dai tempi dei miei study al
Language Center di FU REN University e poi più recentemente
quando ci siamo rivisti per un paio di settimane in Bordentown,
NJ, prima della fatale malattia.
Devo la mia vita a Pat! Il Signore lo abbia in gloria.
Grato, di fare pervenire al vs Rev Superiore Generale questo
mio piccolo ringraziamento.
Saluto fraternamente in Cristo e invoco ogni benedizione
sulla vs Congregazione per l'intercessione della Madonna del
Rosario di Fatima.

Pat sia sempre benedetto! Mi scrisse che offriva sofferenza
e
dolore della sua malattia per il mio ritorno al ministero
sacerdotale attivo ... e così sono tornato al ministero
sacerdotale che avevo lasciato da molti anni.
L'offerta di Pat, ha trovato grazia presso Dio.

A Great Measure of Humility
Brother Henry Miller
Brother
Henry Miller SVD has given a lifetime of cheerful and diligent
service to the great work of Christ, preaching his good news to
people who had not yet heard it. When Brother Roger first went
to Ghana in 1948, it was shortly after World War II., he endured
attacks from scorpions in mission and snake bites on various
occasions. On one occasion, he explains the horror he underwent,
"one never knew what to expect next. I met an eight foot black
cobra which was stretched across my foot after evening prayer
when it was night time. I had no light. The snake struck and hit
my trouser." On one occasion he had a local leave for two weeks
and made arrangements for a Brother to pick him up from the
station. It was fourteen miles off the main road, and the
Brother never showed up. He started to walk from 5pm without a
torchlight depending on the moonlight reaching the mission
destination for his vacation after six hours. Later he called
the Brother who was to pick him only to apologize that he was
tired and fell asleep. It takes a great measure of humility to
accept that. Brother Miller was born in 1922 in Baltimore,
Maryland on the third of January. He was raised in an orphanage
run by Franciscan sisters from the age of two.

We are very sorry to inform about the demise of Fr.
Kerketta
Augustus, SVD, from INE Province. Fr. Augustus was suffering
from Colon Cancer, was taken to Holy Spirit Hospital, Mumbai for
treatment. He was brought back to Jharsuguda on 11.03.2017 and
was admitted at St. Mary's Hospital, Jharsuguda for Palliative
Care. Yesterday night (21.03.2017), he developed breathing
trouble and was put on oxygen. He breathed his last today
(22.03.2017) morning at 5. 45. a.m.
The funeral service
will be on 23.03.2017 at 10.00 a.m. at Provincial House, Shanti
Bhavan, Jharsuguda, Odisha
